Ethics and Character Education

Modern society, characterized by science, technology, globalization, multiculturalism requires civic qualities that are significantly different from the morality and character required in the traditional society which is often considered as regional, unitary, or qualitative. In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution where economics, culture, and education as well as physical, intellectual, cultural, technological, and psychological phenomena are heavily intertwined, ethical issues also have a multi-layered and convergent nature. Moreover, in the future society, it is predicted that numerous ethical issues will arise as humans and AI robots share their lives deeply. Accordingly the morality or character capability that will be required in this era is also geared to enable learners to find, explore, and solve various ethical problems in their lives and cultures such as homes, schools, villages, and childcare institutions. In order to fulfill this goal, the doctoral program in the Ethics and Character Education major covers 1) future technological society and ethics and character education, 2) the developmental theories on morality and character education, 3) curriculum and teaching methods on moral and character education, 4) oriental ethics and etiquette education, 5) violence prevention and treatment program, and 6) character educator training program. Based on these six areas, we provide the doctoral students with a curriculum which is to foster education experts who can conduct research and education on ethics and character education in various contexts including both the inside and and the outside of public education.
